Makeup Primer: Worth the Extra Step?

Find out if they make a visible difference

Pro makeup artist Molly Stern says primers are meant to serve as a layer between skin and foundation to create a more even surface. But not everyone needs them. "The best candidate for them would be someone who is very oily or has a lot of scarring from acne," she says. But do primers actually make a difference? We had two women of different ages each test a top foundation primer geared toward their skin type. Find out if their makeup looked better ... and if anyone noticed.

The New Place to Be Naked

It was the slicing of hair that sent a shudder around the globe - but in a good way! The locks hadn't even hit the floor and we were in a frenzy. I'm talking about Victoria Beckham and her bold pixie cut that made every single one of us think about chopping off our own long do's. Being dubbed the naked neck this seasons styles don't go past the collarbone.

Along with Victoria, Rhinanna, Anne and Gwenyth have all jumped on the band wagon.

Take A Chanel Chance

Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche
"The newest incarnation of Chance. A decidely young scent for those who dare to dream. Freshness, floral, sensual, sweet, spicy."

Looking at the Chanel website she starts to read about their new fragrance 'Chance Eau Fraiche'. "A reincarnation of the unexpected Chance". Without ever trying the first Chance she wonders if there is any difference other than the packaging.

She opens the product and firstly inhales - a long deep breath. On first sniff the fragrence stings the nostrils and catches in her throat, tasting it in her mouth. She senses a mixture of floral mixed with a muskiness. A hint of masculinity lingers. She waves it under her boyfriends nose and asks if he likes it. " Is that for men or women? he asks. Not a good sign....

She sprays it on her neck, dabs it around her wrists and behind her ears and sprays it in the air and runs through it. All being "tricks" she had read that makes the fragrance smell its best, but she is unsure if it makes a difference. Because it is a new fragrance she is aware of it all day. Wearing it, the scent is more subtle that she expected it to be. With the smell wafting around her all day it reminded her of someone with a......she thinks of the appropriate word......more mature age. She feels like she smells as though her mother or grandmother should smell - not necessarily a bad thing. She believes every age has an appropriate scent and this one doesn't suit her.

She wonders though, what it would smell like on somebody else, it is after all a very pleasant fragrance. Perfume is a uniquely personal thing, with it smelling completely different on every single person.

Shed Some Light - Roc Retin-Ox Illuminateur Review

It's a sunny Saturday morning and she is getting ready for her usual Saturday with her Mum. After showering she washes her face, moisturises and gets ready to do her make up. Weekends, she likes to wear very little, if any make up at all, because of the fact she wears it everyday to work - she likes to give her skin a chance to "breathe". Never-the-less, she decides to try Roc Retin-Ox Illuminateur Intensive Anti Wrinkle Ultra Light Foundation. The first thing she does is smells it. She doesn't want anything smelly wafting around her nose all day. It's smells nice, kind of "perfumey", kind of citrus, kind of sweet, she can't pick what it is exactly.

She opens it up, it looks very brown. She checks the packaging. Yep, it's for fair skin she says to herself. She applys to her whole face then squints her eyes and leans close to the mirror. It's doesn't look like she has put anything on. She applys another coat - keeping her hopes up. Again, she leans close to the mirror. This time she sees a slight shimmer - a sparkle of gold glitter across her cheeks. She reads the packaging again, thinking she has the wrong idea of what this product does. 'Ultra light foundation'. More like non-existent. She is confused. Is this an illuminator or a foundation?

Walking around the house she finds her boyfriend and asks "does it look like I have anything on my face?" Squinting he runs his eyes over her face. "Ummmm....it looks sort of......glittery" his voice ending on a high note as if more asking a question than giving an observation.

She decides that this would serve better as a shimmer to wear over her foundation. Besides, she didn't see the point of wearing something so light that it can't even been seen.

P.S. She checked and she still has wrinkles while wearing it.
